St Nicholas Church of England Primary School

Physical Education (PE)

At St Nicholas, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that pupils from Reception to Year 6 not only enjoy but also allows them to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. We intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils and provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Our curriculum offer is broad; every class will receive a minimum of two PE sessions per week across a range of different sports and activities. We also give our pupils an enhanced swimming curriculum offer of 10 lessons in Years 3, 4 and 5, as we believe this is an important life skill. For children who have not achieved swimming proficiency, we offer small group top-up sessions towards the end of their primary years. In addition to this, their is a wide range of extra-curricular sports on offer, including basketball, football, rugby, x-country, dance and cricket. Because we believe that every pupil deserves an opportunity to represent their school in sport, we strive to make sure that this is the case. Our sports coaches and PE Subject leaders work closely together to be able to offer at least one extra-curricular sporting opportunity to every pupil before they leave at the end of Year 6.

The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives
